New Top-Level Domains available in 2012

Monday, 12 December, 2011

The domains for the internet have so far been strictly regulated in accordance with geographic directions. Aside from the prominent top-level-domain “.com” most appellations are referring to countries, such as “.at” for the Austrian region. Beginning with January 12, 2012, such top-level-domains can now be freely registered by any company or enterprise with regard to their own name, their trademark or any other generic nomination. It is likely that various multinational enterprises will use this new possibility and register their own name or trademark as top-level-domain. The only obstacles are the registration costs, as ICANN as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers as the international relevant agency will charge roughly € 180,000.00 for the registration of a new top-level-domain.
